CCTV systems in technical protection

Whether it consists of one camera and a monitor, or the complex video surveillance system with hundreds of cameras and digital recorders, the purpose of CCTV or “Closed-circuit television” is to ensure safety of various facilities, from houses and flats to big corporate systems.

Whatever type of video surveillance system it is, it should certainly meet the two most important criteria:
• prevention – discouragement of potential thieves
• reliable identification of the perpetrator and/or undesired event

The first step is defining the purpose of the system. What do you wish to observe: main entrances and exits? Vehicles? Do you wish to see faces, shop assistants, the crowd? What quality of image do you require? The term quality can refer to how detailed the image is or how many individual images in a time unit you need? Full motion signifies TV quality and totals 25 frames per second. Think about the way you will perform monitoring. Will you record the whole time and then review the tapes when the problem surges? Or maybe you will employ a worker who will monitor continuously? Do you want to have access through Internet and the ability to access the system from a distant location (other street, town, continent…) and watch the footage in real time or review the recorded material according to the time and date? Maybe it is important to you to define the area of special interest, e.g. desk, computer or the cash-register? In case of unauthorized access, a telephone report, silent alarm or 3G live transmission to your mobile phone can be activated.

Therefore, technical possibilities are practically unlimited. Only you can decide what your priorities are: do you wish to avoid potential undesired events or identify and catch the perpetrators? Both things are important, but keep in mind that your decision will affect the type and quality of equipment, as well as the costs.

Video surveillance in schools
Having in mind the security, video surveillance should be seen as a contribution to a much higher level of security and discipline of both students and teachers. There is a significant drop in the number of undesired events, every person entering the school premises is registered, cameras impartially record all events, and it is being said that “a picture is worth a thousand words”.
Video surveillance also acts in a preventive manner, because people who wish to harm pupils avoid schools with video surveillance, and even if an incident occurs, it is easy to stage a reconstruction. We wish to point out that video surveillance should be seen primarily as an investment that pays off quickly. Schools that have video surveillance have recorded a significant drop in the number of cases involving destroying school property.

PC IN VIDEO SURVEILLANCE

Video surveillance done in this way is the cheapest, particularly if we already have computers we can use. Unfortunately, this solution has many disadvantages. A significant number of them has been dealt with thanks to the development of technology, but the given solution still cannot be used in any of the existing professional applications of video surveillance, primarily because of the instability of “Windows” operating system. Besides, there is a need for a strong an well-configurated computer which will be used for that purpose only. In our conditions, of course, it is often not possible.

Digital video recorder (DVR)

This is certainly the best and the highest quality video surveillance. In fact, DVR is a professional, high-quality, special-purpose computer with specially developed software. The material is being recorded on one or two hard discs, which can be exchangeable, i.e. placed in the directory which enables easy access without the need to open the device. Besides, DVR can (depending on the model and the producer) contain an integrated DVD recorder, for the purpose of filing away and exchange of the recorded material.
